Citing CIMAR

The official name of our center is the “Tufts Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance (CIMAR).” Please use the following text when citing or crediting CIMAR, including in a slide presentation, poster, or paper.

    • For CIMAR Pilot-funded research, please include: “This research was supported in part by pilot funding from the Tufts Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance (CIMAR).”
    • For papers, presentations, and posters, please use: “This research was supported in part by the Tufts Center for Integrated Management of Antimicrobial Resistance (CIMAR).”
    • For your grant application resources page, please use the text included in this CIMAR Resources File.

Grants and Pilot Funding

Applying for External Grants:

For their AMR-related projects, CIMAR Core Faculty are encouraged to apply for grant funding through CIMAR, and we’ve made the process simple for you.

CIMAR grants should address topics relevant to:

    1. Therapies for treating microbial infections that are resistant to antibiotic therapy or fundamental mechanisms of development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
    2. Policies that describe and/or mitigate the spread of AMR infections (including antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention).
    3. Educational or training programs that address AMR awareness and understanding.

Faculty requesting to submit a grant application through CIMAR must obtain approval from their respective Department Chair (Tufts University) or Division Chief (Tufts Medical Center) agreeing to the submission of the application with CIMAR oversight. Once this is done, faculty should complete the CIMAR Grant Submission Request Form and email it to CIMAR@tufts.edu, CC’ing the Chief or Chair.

Investigators from Tufts Medical Center and/or Tufts University’s participating schools (Tufts University’s School of Medicine, the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Arts and Sciences) will annually receive, for discretionary use, the equivalent of 5% return from the indirect costs generated from any newly funded CIMAR grant(s). This does not apply to submissions for which the indirect costs were abated. If a CIMAR Core Faculty member does not have an appointment at Tufts Medical Center or at one of the aforementioned participating schools at Tufts University, said investigator can apply for grants without completing the Grant Submission Request Form as there will be no return from indirect costs.

Please note:

    • If an Investigator is submitting an AMR grant for renewal, it can be designated as CIMAR but the funded renewal will not result in the 5% indirect cost return.
    • For multiple-PI grants or grants with subcontracts, this indirect cost return will be distributed to each eligible PI in proportion to their subcontract ICR.

CIMAR Pilot Funding:

CIMAR has committed to funding two to four pilot projects proposed by our faculty each year in the specific areas of: Combination Drug Development, Stewardship & Surveillance, and/or Education & Awareness. Faculty are encouraged to submit a Concept Summary Statement form to the CIMAR Leadership, including a brief (3 paragraph) summary of the proposed project and how they envision the work generated from the pilot funding could catalyze future externally sponsored funding to expand the initiative. Faculty should be sure to answer these questions: 1) How does the proposal fit with the aims of CIMAR?; 2) What kind of collaboration will the project involve?; and 3) Why is a pilot project the correct mechanism for this proposal?

In order to submit a pilot proposal for consideration by CIMAR, Core Faculty should fill out the form linked above and send it to us at CIMAR@tufts.edu.

In our first year, CIMAR funded three pilot projects for amounts ranging from $20,000-$40,000 each, with the amount depending on a given project’s scope.

The 2019-2020 CIMAR Pilot Projects cover the following topics:

    • Combination Immunotherapy to Treat XDR-TB
    • Rational Design of Multidrug Therapy for Drug-Resistant Bacterial Infections
    • Urinary Test for Measuring ART Adherence
