Spring 2025 Featured Trainee:
Mohamed Salem Jedeh, BDS, MSc
- Tufts PhD Candidate in Clinical and Translational Sciences investigating antibiotic resistance among dental patients in Libya
- Dean of Zintan College of Dentistry at Zintan University in Libya
Mohamed Salem Jedeh is a PhD student in Clinical and Translational Science (CTS) at Tufts University’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences investigating antibiotic resistance among dental patients in Libya. With the guidance of his mentorship team, Mohamed aims to assess patterns of antibiotic use in dental care, identify the prevalence of resistant infections, and explore strategies to promote responsible antibiotic prescribing practices. His mentors include Levy CIMAR’s Shira Doron, the Chief Infection Control Officer for Tufts Medicine, as well as Tufts University School of Dental Medicine’s Athanasios Zavras and Jayapriyaa Shanmugham and Tufts CTSI’s Anastasia Gurinovich. Dr. Doron’s mentoring foci include infection control and antimicrobial stewardship, while Drs. Zavras and Shanmugham advise on the dental and clinical aspects of Mohamed’s work. Dr. Gurinovich is a statistician and advises Mohamed quantitative and analytical components of his research.
Mohamed is originally from Libya, where he began a career in dentistry after earning a Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) from Al-Fatah Medical University in 2005. Later, he completed advanced training at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD), where he earned certificates from the Comprehensive and Interdisciplinary Departments of Dentistry and a master’s degree in clinical research in 2012.
Mohamed’s interest in antibiotic resistance stems from his experience as the head of the Rapid Response Center of Libya’s Zintan Municipality during the COVID-19 pandemic. There, he observed the widespread use of antibiotics and its potential long-term impact on public health, which motivated him to pursue research in this field. In addition to his clinical background, Mohamed has extensive experience in dental education and administration, having served as a lecturer, department head, and currently as the Dean of Zintan College of Dentistry at Zintan University.
Looking ahead, Mohamed’s goal is to become an independent investigator dedicated to advancing antimicrobial stewardship in dentistry, particularly in developing countries. He aspires to contribute to global efforts to combat antibiotic resistance by promoting evidence-based practices in dental care and public health.
In his spare time, Mohamed enjoys spending time with family, exploring new places, and staying active outdoors.
